“[A] revelation . . . an episodic work about urban struggle and resilience combining elements of hip-hop and Afro-Colombian dance.”—New York Times

We dance, more than to be seen, to be heard!”—Sankofa Danzafro

Laguna Dance Festival presents internationally acclaimed Colombian contemporary hip hop dance company Sankofa Danzafro in an evening event including a reception and performance.

In the contemporary city, people of different backgrounds and cultures, with different ways of understanding the world, coexist in a limited space—which can mean inequity, hostility, and solitude, but also connection. Through powerful Afro-Colombian and Afro-contemporary dance, live drumming, and singing, Sankofa Danzafro’s La Ciudad de los Otros (The City of Others) demands that the city be a site not of discrimination and marginalization but of positive coexistence. The City of Others exuberantly calls forth a city as a place for everyone.

Founded by Rafael Palacios in Colombia in 1997, Sankofa Danzafro seeks to build a bridge between Afro-Colombian peoples and the African continent. The company creates poetic dance works rooted in African dance tradition that connect to the daily as well as the contemporary. Sankofa Danzafro has performed in Brazil, France, Peru, Spain, Jamaica, Burkina Faso, Canada, Uruguay, China, and the United States, and has been awarded the 2008 National Dance Award by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia as well as a mention from the United Nations for its “good practice of Afro-descendant social inclusion in Latin America.”
