Attend this free event to see a rare glimpse behind the performance with our featured guest company from New Zealand. An informal evening of on-stage rehearsals with the dancers and Artistic Director and Choreographer, Neil Ierema will open your eyes to the magic and artistry that is performance dance.

Join us for an evening with Black Grace, direct from New Zealand, the company is a powerful ensemble, comprised of some of New Zealand’s finest dancers. Filling the stage with great physicality and emotion, Neil leremia’s choreography fuses contemporary dance with traditional Samoan movement that is eloquent, spiritual, athletic, and lyrical. Evening performances will be presented over two acts, with the first featuring Handgame, a rhythmic dance utilizing fa’ataupati (Samoan slap dance), and Kiona and the Little Bird Suite, a dance using body percussion influenced by traditional Samoan Sasa while incorporating live singing, drumming and chanting. The evening’s 2nd act is a thought-provoking and visually stunning work, the most recent repertory dance, Paradise Rumour. 

Evening starts with a pre-show curtain speech at 6:30 and a 15-minute intermission between performances.

Black Grace is a powerful ensemble, comprised of some of New Zealand’s finest dancers, who fill the stage with great physicality and emotion. Led by Neil leremia’s choreography the company will fuse contemporary dance with traditional Samoan movement in Handgame, a rhythmic dance utilizing fa’ataupati (Samoan slap dance), Kiona and the Little Bird Suite, a dance using body percussion influenced by traditional Samoan Sasa that incorporates live singing, drumming and chanting. Special to Saturday’s performance is the world premiere dance choreographed by Laguna Dance Festival’s Artistic Director, Jodie Gates, in collaboration with the Laguna Beach Music Festival.

Los Angeles Ballet & Black Grace,

Los Angeles Ballet is the leading ballet company in Los Angeles known for staging classical, contemporary, romantic and neoclassical ballets, pioneering and presenting new works by many of today’s most innovative dance-makers. Los Angeles Ballet will be performing Nicolas Blanc’s contemporary ballet Tableaux Vivants and Los Angeles Ballet’s Artistic Director Melissa Barak’s compelling work adapted from film to stage, Reclamation.

Evening performances start at 7:30 with a 15-minute intermission between performances.

Syncopated Ladies, the All-Female tap production propels beautiful, classy, and diverse women onto a re-invigorated stage, weaving their inspiring stories with intricate footwork, feminine prowess, and life-renewing energy. Dancing to today’s cutting-edge music, from pop to hip-hop, salsa, and even a couple tear-jerking ballads, Syncopated Ladies puts on an electrifying, stirring, and energizing nonstop action-filled section act in our matinee performance.

Los Angeles Ballet, is the leading ballet company in Los Angeles known for staging classical, contemporary, romantic and neoclassical ballets, pioneering and presenting new works by many of today’s most innovative dance-makers. Joining in the performance are special solos by LDF’s 2024 Young Artist Scholarship Recipients!

Matinee performance is in two acts with one 15-minute intermission. Event features a post-show meet & greet with the dancers in the lobby of theater.
